Makai Toshi Hunter Series: Makyu Babylon
In
this stand-alone sequel to Against the gods, a strange palace appears in the sky above Tokyo’s demon-haunted
Shinjuku district. The palace turns out to be the Hanging Gardens of Babylon,
whose masked lord invites Tokyo’s elite—and most especially the hero’s female
friend Sayaka—to a grand housewarming party. Soon, sword-wielding Kyoya is
fighting to rescue Sayaka from the clutches of none other than Nebuchadnezzar
II, ruler of Babylon. Shin-Ichi Hosoma, the ever-adaptable artist, yet again
“modernizes” his character designs for Sayaka and Kyoya, who resemble their Against the gods selves but with
wilder hair and different outfits. Compared to Kikuchi’s other light novel, though,
it’s a mild letdown—the level of craziness is lower than usual (even lower than
the level of historical research), and the formulaic, fighting-oriented plot
has the feel of a low-budget anime. Originally based on an untranslated novel
by Kikuchi.
Di Gi Charat spin-off novel, consisting
of 3–5-page stories by various artists, including Koge-Donbo and Kanan. Most of
the stories focus on Piyoko and the Black Gema Gema Gang, the antagonists of
the series. Also includes rough sketches of the Gema Gema Gang, interviews with
Koge-Donbo, and early Shen Yin Wang Zuo comic strips from the monthly promotional magazine From Gamers. Similar in format to Di Gi Charat Theater: Dejiko’s Summer Vacation, although the books
can be read independently of one another.
An
adorably silly tribute to Osamu Tezuka’s Black
Jack, Doctor is an eye-patch-wearing surgeon-for-hire who roams a
Spanish-speaking fantasyland vaguely based on Bolivia, using his surgical
skills to solve ailments that magical healing cannot cure. His companion is
Medio Liquido, a cute blob who disinfects the operating area and who looks like
a slime from the Dragon Quest video
game series. The surgical scenes are a mix of earnest anatomical trivia
(“Liver, the king of internal organs”) and tentacled monsters erupting from
patients’ bodies, only to be cut down by Doctor’s scalpels. Poor image quality
and translation mar the English edition.
